For nearly three decades, Japan dominated Australia’s car import market. However, a major shift has just occurred in the global automotive landscape. For the first time in decades, Japan has lost its position as the top source of new vehicles for Australia, as Chinese-built cars surged ahead in sales.

This milestone highlights the rapidly changing dynamics of the global car industry, with Chinese automakers expanding aggressively into international markets.

China Overtakes Japan In Australian Car Imports

According to recent automotive sales data, China became the largest source of new vehicles sold in Australia in February 2026, surpassing Japan for the first time since 1998.

During the month:

This marks the first time in nearly 28 years that Japan has not been the leading vehicle supplier to the Australian market.

Rapid Growth Of Chinese Car Brands

One of the biggest reasons behind this change is the growing popularity of Chinese automotive brands in Australia. Over the past few years, companies such as BYD, Chery, SAIC Motor, and Great Wall Motors have expanded their presence with competitively priced vehicles and modern technology.

In February alone, BYD recorded 5,323 vehicle sales, representing a massive 62% increase compared with the same month last year.

Chinese manufacturers are also producing vehicles in China for global brands, which further increases the number of vehicles counted as Chinese exports.

Japanese Car Sales Declining

While Chinese vehicles surged in popularity, sales of cars manufactured in Japan declined significantly. Reports indicate that Japanese-built vehicle sales dropped by more than 30% year-over-year in February.

Several major Japanese brands are facing growing competition from new entrants offering more affordable electric vehicles, hybrids, and feature-rich SUVs.

Despite the decline, Japanese brands such as Toyota, Nissan, and Mazda remain extremely popular in Australia and continue to dominate many individual model sales charts.

Popular Vehicles Still Lead The Market

Even though China has overtaken Japan as the top vehicle source, traditional favorites remain strong in the Australian market.

Models like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux continue to rank among the country’s best-selling vehicles. Meanwhile, newer Chinese models such as the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro are quickly climbing the sales rankings and attracting buyers with competitive pricing and modern features.

A Major Shift In The Global Auto Industry

Australia’s car market is one of the most open and competitive in the world, making it an important indicator of global automotive trends. The rise of Chinese vehicles reflects broader changes happening across the industry, particularly the rapid growth of electric and affordable technology-focused cars.

While Japan still holds a strong reputation for reliability and quality, the surge of Chinese brands suggests the competitive landscape will continue evolving in the years ahead.
